How much would you invest to change someone's life?
The Problem
On average, 75% of offenders will go on to re-offend within two years. So imagine a development programme that engages, inspires and compels individuals to make meaningful and sustainable change in their lives.
"There is nothing about a caterpillar that tells you it's going to become a butterfly."
This belief drives The Chrysalis Programme, and helps us to provide a guide for change that goes beyond rehabilitation, and into engagement and re-integration.
Our Research - Early Years Development
Physical or psychological trauma in early childhood can have a direct impact on brain development. It can stunt thinking, and be detrimental to emotional skills.
These experiences are reinforced by the reaction of the adults in the child's life, whether those reactions are positive or negative.
Through such trauma, many grow up ill equipped. They have poor decision making and interpersonal skills, and display anti-social behaviour. An inability to communicate effectively, alongside low self-esteem and low basic employment skills can lead to further isolation or feeling disadvantaged.
Our Research - Positive Reinforcement
Our rationale is that positive reinforcement, in the form of education and training is more likely to achieve improved behaviours, and sustained positive change.
"Punishment is NOT simply the opposite of positive reinforcement; positive reinforcement results in lasting behavioural modification, whereas punishment only temporarily changes behaviour and presents many detrimental side effects." B.F. Skinner - Psychologist

On average, over 75% of all offenders are re-offending within two years of release. Of adult offenders, 56% will re-offend at an average cost of £152,460 over 2 years.
Poor experience and trauma, physical or psychological, during early years has a direct impact on brain development. This can lead to stunted thinking, emotional, and decision making skills.
The reaction (positive or negative) of important adult figures in a child's life can reinforce these experiences.
The limited thinking, emotional and decision making skills can further lead to a lack of interpersonal skills, anti-social behaviour, and an inability to communicate effectively. Combined with low self-esteem and no basic employment skills, a person can quickly feel isolated and disadvantaged.
The Chrysalis Programme Innovatively and uniquely aims to stimulate/jump-start participant’s thinking/attitude, social capability and capacity, enabling participants to think more positively, creating self-esteem, self-belief, self-confidence, self-motivation and hope.
We believe there is nothing about a caterpillar that tells you it's going to become a butterfly. We work to this belief by helping people learn to do things differently and better, creating capability.
The Chrysalis Programme is applied through interactive modular sessions. These modules are learner focused, and mentors support those on the programme.
As well as giving participants the chance to gain real qualifications, the key for us is creating an engaging learning environment with thought provoking concepts and novel delivery. We want to re-ignite thinking by revealing what to do instead of what not to do.
Our team creates a protected stage of development by providing participants with a non-judgemental, safe learning environment with opportunities to learn new skills, mentors for support, and the skills and tools to own and drive change.
We do this most effectively by treating all participants as inidivuals, listening to their perspectives and showing respect, empathy and compassion for a participants 'journey', solidified by a 20 year 'game plan' to help get them where they want to be.
The Chrysalis Programme contains 6 core modules consisting of up to 8 days of guided learning. This means there are up to 6, one or two day, individual modules. These are delivered over 5 or 6 weeks as follows:
M1 - Know Thy Self (1 Day)
M2 - Personal Leadership (2 Day)
M3 - Interpersonal & Communication Skills (1 Day)
M4 - Health & Wellness (1 Day)
M5 - Thinking Differently (1 Day)
M6 - Presenting Yourself Effectively (2 Day)
Chrysalis modules are made up of a mixture of presentations, exercises, activities, problem solving, thinking, planning, testing, quizzing, reviewing and discussions.

If just 30% of the Chrysalis Programmes participant who have completed do not reoffend, this equates to a minimum public purse saving of £11,677,500. Putting it another way, if just four Chrysalis Participants do not reoffend (£45k yearly prison cost/per person), this saving would cover the cost for over 120 places on Chrysalis Programmes.
